The Workforce Development Authority (WDA), through the World Bank funded Skills Development Fund (SDF), has given grants worth Rwf 570 million to seventeen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. The recipients were drawn from carpentry, automotive mechanics, manufacturing, welding, hospitality/tourism and agricultural sections from 15 districts and Kigali City.Twelve are from the private sector, mainly Vocational Training Centres (VCTs), cooperatives and NGOs which accounted for 65 per cent of the total grant.The grants will help mainly to buy equipment and training materials for the institutions.  The winners will have to give vocational training to at least 20 people within three months in their schools or companies.WDA Director General Jerome Gasana said they will closely follow up the implementation of the proposals."We will inspect them to check if they are using the money to buy training materials or equipment written in their proposals.’’State Minister in Charge of Primary and Secondary Education, Mathias Harebamungu, said the grants will help promote the country’s vision of building a knowledge based economy and tackling unemployment through vocational education.
