Mozambique national team head coach Chiquinho Conde was all smiles after Sunday’s crucial 2-0 win over Rwanda at Huye Stadium put his side on the brink of AFCON 2023 qualification.

The result saw the Mambas move back to second on Group L table, two ahead of third-placed Benin.

Conde’s side put one foot in next year&039;s AFCON finals in Cote D'Ivoire as at least a draw against Benin in Maputo would be enough for them to book the ticket to take part in the continental football tournament they last played in 2010 in Angola.

"I wish to qualify for the AFCON because it has been 13 years since Mozambique last made it to the competition. This is a good opportunity for us to be there once again." Conde told the press after the win over Rwanda

"Today I am happy, the team played hard and we were tactically efficient. Now we will be back home to finish the job."

Conde went on to state that Amavubi were even lucky to get a draw in the reverse fixture a year ago since the game was not played in Maputo.

"The first leg in South Africa was a difficult moment, we didn&039;t give our maximum. At this moment many players are done with their leagues in Europe, they are tired but they changed their mindset about the AFCON and we are almost through," he said.
