German engineers on September 06 held talks with President Yoweri Museveni on the construction of a railway line from Kenya through Uganda to Sudan.

Engineers Klaus Thormahlen, Managing Director of Thormahlen Holding International and Jens Flachsbarth, Managing Director of Ingeno Group met Museveni to present their Eastern Railway Project proposal.

"The railway project, when operationalised, is expected to help in the development of the traffic infrastructure which in turn will also trigger expansion and improvement of the industrial, tourism and trade sectors of the region,” a press statement noted.

President Museveni reportedly told the visiting team that his government would take part in the joint venture with the other two partner countries.

Ugandan Ministers for Works, Eng. John Nasasira and Presidency, Beatrice Wabudeya, NEPAD Kenya Secretariat Chief Executive Officer, Grace Ongile, and Principal Economist, Abdulrahman Ismail attended the meeting at State House in Nakasero, Kampala.

Lately, a large number of business people from the East African Community member states have flooded South Sudan market, whose economy is just emerging from over two decades of a devastating conflict.

The railway line is expected to boost both exports and imports in the Great Lakes Region.
