Twenty four local and regional volleyball clubs have so far confirmed their participation in the forthcoming International Memorial Volleyball tournament slated for 7th -8th June in Kigali.
The annual tournament to remember the lives players, coaches and fans who perished during the 1994 Tutsi Genocide is set to be contested by male and female regional clubs from Kenya, Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania, Uganda and hosts Rwanda .
Already the Uganda Volleyball Federation has confirmed to send four teams for the event.
Kenya is sending one male team; three are expected from Burundi while the DRC and Tanzania are yet to confirm their participation.
For the last 10 years, the tournament has been dominated by the foreign teams on females’ front, no home team has ever won the tournament since it started in 1998.
KCC and KAVC both from Uganda won this trophy thrice in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001, 2002, 2003 respectively.
Local teams expected to participant include; APR, Rwanda National University (UNR), KVC, and KIST, Ruhango District, APEDI Rwaza, and ENDP Karubanda, GS Butare,Christ Roi,KIE ,IPM, Ngoma district
KCB(Kenya),KAVC(Uganda),KCC(Uganda) Nkumba University(Uganda),New Colombe(Burundi) and Bujumbura Wezo Wandani(Burundi) are also expected to feature in the two day event.
The event is sponsored by CSR, and the National Commission for fighting Genocide in corroboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Rwanda Volleyball Federation, FRVB.
