No matter the season, or upcoming trend, there are a few wardrobe staples that are necessary for any closet year after year. Without exception, a silk scarf is one of these. Silk scarves have been a timeless classic. Film and fashion icons have worn them for decades. The most timeless designer of silk scarves has been Hermès. The brightly-colored, square, ornate, hand-printed and hand-sewn scarves from the French fashion house have been seen on fashion models, celebrities, and politicians. The long list of supporters includeBreakfast at Tiffany’s actress Audrey Hepburn, British royalty Queen Elizabeth II, entrepreneur and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and singer Madonna. This season, British fashion house Burberry modernized the more ornate design by creating a camel, crème checked scarf with their signature burgundy trim. Leading designer Oscar de La Renta’s scarf stayed with the more feminine appeal, creating soft white flowers on black silk. Emilio Pucci, famous for bright colors and vivid patterns, created several scarves this season with geometric shapes in a cashmere and silk blend. Even shoe icon, Jimmy Choo, took to scarves this season, with their printed brand. Scarves are such an essential piece because they can be worn in a variety of different ways. You can wear it as a head scarf, as Audrey Hepburn was famous for doing. Or you can put it in your head like a headband, as Nicole Richie likes to do. Alternatively, you can wear it around your neck as traditional. Or, even tie it to your purse to add a splash of additional color. Silk scarves can have a high price tag, so it’s important to take care of them properly. If treated well, they can last decades. Remember to not store your scarf in direct sunlight, as it can fade the colors quickly. When you are not wearing the scarf, make sure to roll it, instead of folding it. Wash your scarf in warm water with a gentle detergent. And when drying, do not twist it, but press it gently between two dry towels. Taking good care of a beautiful silk scarf will ensure season after season of wearing the timeless wardrobe essential. That’s the fashion scoop for this week. Got a thought? Trend? Style you hate?
