The Rwanda Investigation Bureau is searching for a man in Kayonza district who allegedly hacked to death his wife and three children, on Thursday, June 15.
The alleged murder was committed in Mubuga village, Gitara cell, Kabare sector, Kayonza District.
On Friday, RIB Spokesperson Thierry Murangira said that investigations and a search for the suspect were under way.
He said: "But we cannot disclose further details or results of the preliminary investigation at the moment until the suspect is caught."
The motive for the alleged murder is still unknown.
According to Longin Gatanazi, the executive secretary of Kabare Sector, where the incident happened, the suspect relocated to Kabare Sector eight months earlier from Kibungo Sector in Ngoma District.
He said: "Musonera, who is in his 40s, killed his wife and his three children. The three children include two girls and a boy."
Their bodies were taken to Rwinkwavu Hospital for a post-mortem.
Shock and grief engulfed Mubuga village.
Gatanazi said: "We advised residents to be vigilant and share any information that might lead to the arrest of the suspect."
