Junior athletes have started preparations for the annual championship scheduled to take place on June 14 in Gicumbi, Northern Province.

The annual event is aimed at spotting new talents and selecting the national team that will take part in next month’s World Junior Athletics championship in Poland.

Junior athletes in all the 25 local clubs have started preparations for the event. Each club is to have three athletes compete in each category of each discipline.

Athletes will compete in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, and 10000m. There will be selection of the best athletes in 100m, 200m and 400m.

"We have started registration and are expecting a good turn up,” said Alphonse Harerimana, Permanent Secretary in the local athletics federation, RAF, registration ends on June 10.

According to the event organizers, only athletes born between 1989 and 1992 are eligible to compete and all interested clubs have been urged to make their registration to avoid being last minute disorder.
