Police in Nyagatare District are holding a 19-year old man for allegedly hacking his colleague to death. The suspect allegedly stabbed Maurice Habiyambere, 18, after the two dared each other in a fight. The incident took place in Gashenyi Cell, Rukomo Sector at about 7:30pm last Sunday as the two young men walked home after watching a movie at Agasima trading centre. But what began as a debate became tragic after the suspect drew out a knife and stabbed his colleague several times in the head. The victim died as he was being taken to Rukomo Health centre. Sources said the debate was initiated by colleagues watching a movie together. Police said the suspect is a known criminal, who had been stealing agricultural produce from farms in the area, especially bananas. He is currently being held at Gatunda Police Post. Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, Supt Bénoît Nsengiyumva, condemned the act and warned the public to desist from carrying dangerous weapons.He further appealed to traders to inspect for weapons in their premises to avoid such unwarranted bloodshed. Under article 151 of the new penal code, if an offender commits battery or causes bodily injuries that result into death, he/she shall be liable to a prison term of 10 to 15 years.
