Bank of Kigali (BK), Rwanda’s largest bank by profit has rolled out more deposit taking Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) as it steps up efforts to reduce congestion at its branches amidst growing demand for banking services. "We remain committed to bringing financial services closer to the people and we will continue to find innovative ways to financially transform the lives of Rwandans. We have so far installed 15 deposit taking ATMs and intend to increase the number in the near future,” BK’s Chief Executive Officer, James Gatera, said in a statement yesterday. .According to the bank’s officials, the machines can accept both local currency and US Dollars and can be used by anyone who wants to deposit money into a BK’s account without the need for an envelope or a deposit slip.BK was the first bank to introduce ATMs which are deposit taking.According to Gatera, with the exception of South African banks, BK is first bank in Africa to introduce card less deposit taking ATMs.The Bank says it plans to further improve the capabilities of the ATMs to enable transactions such as foreign currency exchange, electricity and water bill payments and air time top-up.These initiatives are in line with the Bank’s strategy to promote banking in addition to its branch expansion."This will make banking services accessible to the wider population. In this year alone, the Bank opened 12 new branches in rural and urban areas to bring our total branch network to 56 branches,” Gatera said.
