Reference is made to the story, Over 10,000 trees planted in Gasabo, published in The New Times of October 28.  According to the story, employees of Kigali Serena Hotel on Saturday joined the residents of Ndera Sector, Gasabo District in the monthly Umuganda (community work) exercise during which 11,000 trees were planted on 20 hectares. While one might say that the exercise was part of the hotel’s Corporate Social Responsibility, it is important to note that some so-called corporate organisations hardly undertake such exercises even as they have a moral and professional obligation to give back to the community. That said, however, I must state that planting trees is a responsibility for everyone, not just businesses or government institutions and officials. It is critical that more and more people join this noble cause since it will have a positive impact on the country’s socio-economic conditions. We must work hard and ensure that at least 30 per cent of the country’s land surface is covered with forests, as the government has announced.Jean Paul ByukusengyeKacyiru
