Police arrests 7 over drugs, illicit brew

RWANDA National Police (RNP) has apprehended five residents of Rukumberi Sector, Ngoma District for allegedly distilling 45 litres of illicit brew commonly known as Kanyanga. The suspects (names withheld), are all aged between 30 and 40 years. They were arrested on Sunday and are being held at Sake Police Station. Police impounded the distilling tools and fermentation products. At least 240 litres of by-products used to distil the illicit brew were destroyed. According Eastern Region police spokesman, Supt Benoit Nsengiyumva, the suspects were arrested after a joint operation by Police, Rwanda Defence Forces and local council leaders of Kigesi and Shyembe cells. Police urged residents to avoid illicit drugs and Kanyanga, and instead engage in legitimate income generating activities. He also advised them to provide timely information to police so as to help in curbing such vices. Nsengiyumva cautioned residents on the consequences of consumption and selling of illicit drugs.
