Jules Mutesa scored 72 points to emerge the winner of the Serena Hotels 3rd Quarterly Mug on Saturday at Kigali Golf Club, Nyarutarama.The 23-year old, who is the national team captain for the forthcoming East Africa Challenge Cup which will be held in Bujumbura, scored 77 points in the first monthly, 72 points in the second and came into the Quarterly Mug trailing in third place.He beat off stiff challenge from his closest Handicap 0-9 rivals led by Kigali Golf Club president Andrew Nkwandi, who came into the tournament leading from the first two monthly mugs and Celestin Habineza.Habineza finished second with 72 points, thus keeping his second position, he held from the July (76 pts) and August (73 pts) monthly mugs, while Nkwandi dropped from first to third after scoring a disappointing 76 points on Saturday. He won the July and August competitions 75 pts and 72 points respectively.Mutesa, who also won the Rwanda Open early this year, attributed his victory to hard work during training. He said, "I am really happy because this victory has taken three months of serious training.”The one-day tournament attracted a record number of participants of over 100 including 62 adults and 65 children and it was co-sponsored by Carlsberg Beer.The adults were pooled in three groups of handicap 19-28, 10-18 and 0-9, the ladies were in a single group, while the children’ tournament (3-14 years) was categorised into three groups.Willy Rugema won the handicap 19-28 (Group III), while Andrew Makaka and Rawal Nikhil finished second and third respectively. Group II (handicap 10-18) was won by Jarmo Gumerus, first runner-up was Bakul Batavia and second runner-up was Aaron Musonda.Clare Kayitesi scooped the ladies top prize, followed by Jenny Linda, while Malvika Rawal.The prize giving ceremony was graced by the Country Manager Serena Hotels Rwanda, Charles Muia, who, promised further support to Kigali Golf Club through sponsoring more children’s tournament in the future.Tournament co-sponsors, Carlsberg, who were making their debut entry into Rwandan golf, also promised more support."It’s our first time to get involved with golf in Rwanda, and I hope it’s the first of many to come. Carlsberg is a premium product and we believe golf offers us the opportunity to tap into that class, which is our main target,” Carlsberg Rwanda Marketing manger, Eric Rwanamiza, told Times Sport.
