Bakeries closed over poor sanitation

The Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS), on Wednesday closed down two bakeries in different suburbs of Kigali over sanitation, during a surprise inspection.Uburyohe bakery based in Masaka and Isange Bakery in Kinyinya were closed over failure to meet the minimum standards. Two other bakeries, Anarax and Goshen bakeries were ordered to improve on their hygiene.At Uburyohe bakery, officials said all the loaves of bread and cakes were found on the floor with flies all over the place. The inspectors also faulted the proprietors for using expired cooking oil and dirty water.For Isange Bakery, it was ordered to close after some of the workers told the inspectors that they ease themselves in the nearby bushes.Dr Mark Bagabe Cyubahiro, the Director General of RBS said they were doing their best to train bakers, but some of them don’t put into practice what they teach them."I am very disappointed if we still have people who operate in such a conditions yet we do everything possible to train and facilitate them,” he said."We visit them and advice them on what and how they should do it. But if they hesitate, we request RBS to intervene and take measures accordingly,” Augustin Shema, the head of Rwanda Bread Bakers Cooperative (RBBC). Sulaiman Nizeyimana, the owner of Uburyohe Bakery said he would seek guidance from the association on the best way forward.
