Someone had to become the beauty queen finally at 11p.m five hours after the ‘fete’ had began, the evening came to a befitting final at the crowning of 21 yrs Uwimbabazi Sandra a first year law student at UNR as miss campus 2008. Her childhood dream had come true, Uwimbabazi exuded grace, charm and confidence on the cat walk and little wonder she was the eventual winner. A worthy winner her eyes turned to the skies and her thank you to the lord was truly one of joy as tears of joy were flowing down her cheeks.

The out going miss campus Karen Utamuriza crowned the beauty queen amidst cheers and glory at a near spectacular event that took place at Butare University on Friday night.

Angele Usanase came first runner-up while Sandra Muganga was the second runner-up, Sadrine Nahayo was chosen miss popularity, Daphine Uwase took the miss proud Rwandan while Monicca Abipaye took the miss elegance title. Sandra Uwimbabazi (the winner) was a favorite of many and raised so much applause whenever she appeared on stage.

The queues at the entrance only told it all. Until 8pm, people were still trickling in, all the VIP section was filled up, so did the chairs in the back section.

The stage was well designed, the contestant’s first appearance was ecstatic, ecstatic because they all clad the traditional outfits which were marvelous, their evening dresses were also quite flattering but their casual out fit were somewhat old fashioned, the swim suit session was the worst as they all clad the same style with one of them wearing body stockings underneath.

While the creative wear session was the most impressive, all the 7 girls had something unique to show, leaving many with ideas for their next outfit, but still their were questions with one of them using an MTN bandana upside down to wrap around her burst. They then did a gliding dance an impressive performance with a touch of professionalism, thanks to the choreographer.

There was entertainment from various local artists like Sandra, Tom close…who went over the top to offer some of the reigning regional beauties copies of their music CDs. The dancing crews also did a few impressive jigs. The event was further made colorful by the presence of the minister of culture and sports along with his daughter.

The event would be/have been arguably among the hottest events on Rwanda’s entertainment calendar, with a combination of glamour, elegance, grace and electric performances.

But like all concerts that luck organization and professionalism, this was not any different; there was not enough publicity to begin with, with the organizing committee headed by Higiro holding a press conference a day to the function. Payments were made at the entrances causing confusion as we had to physically squeeze our way through in to the hall. There was no curtain raiser performance to keep the audience entertained as they waited for the major event to begin. The music was work! Proper organisation was lucking as they could not take control of the noisy audience during the question and answer session; it took the rectors intervention to calm the audience.

Otherwise it was a fair show; we hope the coming much bigger event in October will be more organized.
