Many women experience mild discomfort during menstruation but the term dymenoehoe (painful menstruation periods) applies to women whose pain does not agree with normal activities and requires medication. This pain is commonly accompanied with systemic symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, headache and in some cases even fainting. The immediate cause of this pain is traced to contractions in the lower abdomen. Pre-menstrual pain usually lasts for 1-2 days before bleeding. The pain gradually reduces (but not always) once the menstrual flow starts.According to Dr. Geoffrey Nkusi, a tipped uterus may also cause pain during intercourse. The tissue lining the uterus grows outside causing pain and imbalanced menstrual cycles. Dr.Nkusi advices women with painful menstruation periods to take warm baths, drink warm beverages, do light circular massages with the fingertips around the lower abdomen, walk or exercise regularly, follow a diet rich in complex carbohydrates such as whole grain, fruits and vegetables but low in salt, sugar and alcohol.
