THE national athletics team will fly out of the country on Wednesday ahead of the IAAF World Road Running championships due on October 6 in Karvana, Bulgaria.A provisional seven-man team has been in camp over the past three weeks in Gicumbi, Northern Province, in preparation for the world meet.Rwanda will be represented by a four-member team, which includes Robert Kajuga, Cyriaque Ndayikengurukiye, Sylvain Rukundo and Jean Marie Vianney Uwajeneza. The team is handled by trainer Jean Pierre Ndacyayisenga.According to Ndacyayisenga, all seven athletes have been doing well in training and it wasn’t a clear-cut decision picking the four, who made the final team."It wasn’t an easy task to choose the four, but I am confident we can challenge the world’s best. It may sound impossible to achieve it but we will head to Bulgaria as competitors,” Ndacyayisenga told Times Sport yesterday. The 29-year old added, "I don’t want to say that we are going just to participate, far from it. We are going to compete for medals individually and as a team, and I hope we will do better than we have done in recent years.” The coach said that the remaining three athletes who didn’t make the cup for the tournament, Godfrey Rutayisire, Alexis Nizeyimana and Potien Ntawuyirushintege will compete in the Tanzania half marathon, which is slated for October 14.
