KICUKIRO - Police in Kicukiro is holding a 28-year-old mother for allegedly killing her own two-year old baby. Ancilla Niwemugeni is said to have thrown her baby into a pit latrine on Sunday morning. The baby died hours after.
She is being detained at Gikondo Police Post.

Gikondo Police officer in charge of crime Jean-Marie Mugiraneza said yesterday that they learnt about the incident on Sunday following a tip off from area residents.

"Such cases are not very common in our area. Killing is criminal and the suspect will face the law,” Mugiraneza said.

Niwemugeni is being detained alongside her husband David Nizeyimana. Police said the husband could have connived with his wife to commit the crime.

Area leaders in Gikondo said there were reports in the past that Niwemugeni had tried to strangle the baby.

Jean-Pierre Muyangu, a neighbor, disclosed that the toilet had a padlock which means that the baby certainly did not open for herself.

The revelation contradicts Niwemugeni’s claim that she was outside with the same child shortly before the incident, and the next thing she heard was a child crying inside the toilet.

The body is still being kept at CHUK hospital where it was taken for autopsy.
