Kagame Cup draws still in balance

The long wait for this year’s Cecafa/Kagame Club championship draws will continue as the regional body has failed to come up with the exact date on which the draws will be held. According to the association’s secretary general Nicholas Musonye the draws were supposed to be held yesterday afternoon. However when contacted to reveal the draw to the press, the association’s spokesman Finny Keshi was ignorant about the draws being held on Saturday. When asked when the draws will take place, Keshi said that they are still waiting for a green light from the Cecafa president, who also doubles as the Tanzania Football Federation president, Leodegar Paul Chila Tenga.

MEN AT THE HELM: Leodgar Chilla Tenga (L), his predecessor Denis Obua (C) and Cecafa SG Nicholas Musonye share a light moment.

The draws which have now been shifted thrice by the host nation Tanzania have now been postponed to next week with a date yet to be known.

"We are still waiting for a green light from Tenga and the draws are likely to be next week,” Keshi said. Efforts to get a comment from Musonye were futile as he couldn’t pick up his phone.

Thirteen clubs have already confirmed their participation in this year’s Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa)/Kagame Club Championship. Defending champions APR and Rayon Sport will represent Rwanda.

Other clubs confirmed for this year’s event are last year’s losing finalists, Uganda Revenue Authority, Vital’O of Burundi, Al Hilal of Sudan, Miembeni FC of Zanzibar, Ten-Ten FC from Eritrea, Awassa City of Ethiopia, Banaadir Telecom of Somalia and AS Compagnie of Djibout and Kenya’s Tusker FC.

As a host nation, Tanzania will enjoy an advantage of fielding two teams and will be represented by Yanga and Simba football clubs.

Dar es Salaam’s main stadium, currently under construction, is the most likely venue for the two-week long championship.
