Police in Kigali yesterday arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly issuing forged driver's licenses.The suspect, a resident of Rwezamenyo 1 sector, Nyarugenge district was found with a bag containing 10 provisional licenses, forged traffic police stamp, Rwanda Revenue Authority receipts and lists of people purported to have passed driving tests.Police said the suspect could solicit Rwf10,000 from unsuspecting victims for registration, with a promise to get them a permanent license after paying Rwf500,000.Speaking from police, the suspect admitted to the crimes."I started this illegal business last year in February and I managed to con more than 10 people from whom I collected Rwf350,000. I would promise to get them a permanent license within a period of one month,” he said.The police was tipped off by the suspect’s ‘disgruntled’ wife.The Police Spokes person, Supt. Theos Badege, said the suspect, detained at Nyamirambo Police Station has also been duping people that he owns a driving school, Auto Ecole la Bonne Adresse Ngororero.Badege called on the public to be vigilant and always report suspicious cases."People should go to credible driving schools or even the traffic police when in need of driver’s licenses. It’s safer to go through the right channels than shortcuts,” he said.
