At least five people were confirmed dead and thousands displaced by floodwaters in the Upper East region of Ghana following the spillage of excess water from the Bagre Dam in neighboring Burkina Faso, a senior government official said on Monday. The spillage washed away culverts, roads and school buildings, and caused extensive damage to crops and farmlands, Upper East Regional minister Mark Woyongo told Xinhua via telephone. The spillage, which started on Aug. 23, coupled with six hours of downpour, cut off several communities, including Dacheo, from Bolgatanga, the regional capital, as the bridge that connected them to the capital was washed away. The Bolgatanga Municipal Coordinator of NADMO, Timothy Anas, told state-run Daily Graphic at the weekend that the hardest hit communities were Nyariga, Zuarangu-Moshe and Tindonsobligo.Woyongo told Xinhua that the state relief agency, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), was yet to estimate the extent of damage to property.
