EFFECTIVE next season (2012/13), top flight football league clubs will be allowed to name only four foreign players in their 18-man matchday squads. The foreign player quota rule was passed during Ferwafa’s General Assembly attended by officials from all top flight clubs on Sunday at the football federation headquarters in Remera. The resolution was one of many new rules approved ahead of the new season which kicks off on September 22 instead of 15 as earlier planned.Addressing journalists after the meeting, Ferwafa president Celestin Ntagungira said that all clubs have to adhere to the new regulations."We have agreed that all clubs reduce on the number of foreign players, starting this season. The new policy will have clubs abide by the 4-7 policy this coming season and eventually 3-8 the next season,” noted Ntagungira. Some teams led including league and Peace Cup winners APR, runners up Police and Kiyovu, among others, have already started to prepare for the new rule, signalling that for the first time in 18 seasons, they would use more local players than foreigners.
