Friday was the national day for accountability. During events to mark the day at the office of the Prime Minister, Premier Dr. Damien Habumuremyi, spoke of government’s new drive to ensure that all constructed roads last more than twenty years before any repairs are done.More so, he highlighted other benchmarks for the road infrastructure of the future.  At the same time, plans to overhaul public transport in Kigali city were also revealed. In all the bottom line of the Premier’s discourse, was that wastage of scarce public resource must be curbed. The political leadership of the country continues to demonstrate the political will to ensure accountability to the public and at the same time, ensure a zero tolerance for corruption.Accountability does not only translate into having low levels of corruption, but ensuring that there is value for money on any projects embarked on. More so, it is important to highlight that accountability also encompasses what public officials do while vested with public office. At all times, there should be tangible evidence to show that one has meaningfully served the public good while vested with public office and the attendant resources. The need for accountability must be impressed upon everyone in public and private office. What is important is that goodwill and policy pronouncements aimed at ensuring accountability, are translated into actionable programs.
