ANC agrees to water down controversial information bill The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has agreed to water down the controversial information bill, deleting three provisions which the opposition said would restrict media freedom. The three provisions to be removed include a line that would have sought to make the bill trump the Promotion of Access to Information Act, the 49th clause that sought to ban the release of information relating to any state security matter and the provision that would have given municipalities the power to classify information.
The three provisions were the most contested and branded by the opposition and activists as unconstitutional and a threat to press freedom.
