RRA rewards outstanding taxpayers

KAYONZA – Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), over the weekend, awarded exemplary taxpayers in Eastern Province with certificates of merit.The Deputy Commissioner General of RRA, Richard Tusabe, said that the overall aim was to acknowledge the value of taxes and taxpayers. During the event, the tax body also donated 10 computers to Mukarange Catholic Secondary School.Tusabe assured taxpayers of better services, noting that Rwandans have developed a positive attitude towards paying taxes, observing that accountability and compliance were paramount. "Days of tussling between taxpayers and RRA are long gone. People know paying taxes is in their interest and that of the country.He urged Rwandans to embrace the use of ICT in tax compliance, adding that the system was user friendly."Don’t smuggle goods that are tax-free under the EAC framework. You should also be ready to embrace E-filing and payment. Such is the level Rwanda has reached.”The chairman of the business community in Kayonza District, Damascene Gakuba, said the business community has cultivated cordial relations with RRA.He, however, lamented that a section of the business community were struggling to make use of ICT."E-Tax, E-filing and E-payment are good for business transactions. But the capacity for all businesspersons to access it and later use it remains a challenge”."We have realised the importance of paying taxes. That RRA is bringing its services to our door steps is great news for of us. We don’t need to default anymore,” he said.The Minister of Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana, thanked residents of Eastern Province, for their commitment to paying taxes.He said that the fact that the province collected Rwf 13.5 billion to boost its coffers speaks volumes.The ceremony was attended by the Governor of Eastern Province, Odette Uwamariya, among other government officials.
