Editor,In the article under the heading "UK firm loses plastic bags deal in Rwanda, published in The NewT imes, August, 21, 2012, the first paragraph reads that "The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) Monday said it had cancelled a business deal with a UK-based company to supply environmentally friendly plastic bags.” REMA has been questioned by The New Times readers if it had entered into a business deal with a private company. This is to inform your readers that REMA as a public institution is not doing business. The reality is that a local private company named Alternative Packaging Solutions had requested permission from REMA to import and sell biodegradable plastics called Oxo-biodegradable, which is a technology of a UK based company. After the authorisation, REMA realised that the plastics were not degrading within the indicated time, and it stopped the authorisation of the importing company till these materials are proven to be really biodegradable.
