YESTERDAY’S official launch of the nation’s first solidarity fund, which will be financed through voluntary donations from Rwandans and friends of Rwanda, is an initiative that all of us can and should get behind. Our culture as Rwandan people is based on a sense of community responsibility, innovation and self-sacrifice for the greater good. That is why we’ve been able to withstand all the challenges that our history has thrown at us. During the war of National Liberation, people’s contributions made the final victory possible. When we had to find a legal solution to the effect of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the Gacaca Court process, came in handy. Thereby, providing a solution to the issues of reconciliation and justice. Now, as we attempt to build a modern society, we’ve come to realise that more sacrifice is needed to supplement the existing resources, so as to accelerate efforts to pull the country out of the poverty trap. Hence the Agaciro Development Fund. With this, Rwandans will get the opportunity to partake, even further, in the nation’s development. This Fund does not belong to any individual or institution. The funds garnered will provide a boost to our fellow countrymen. It is pertinent that the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, which will be in charge of this Fund, continuously informs us of the size of the Fund and what the monies are going to do. Doing this will assure Rwandans that their hard-earned monies are being put to good use. Accountability is key here.
