AMAVUBI’s professional defender Edwin Ouon helped his Cyprus side AEL Limassol secure a 2-1 win over Belgium’s Anderlecht in battle to qualify to the group stage of the Uefa Champions League.Playing as a centre back, Ouon’s Limassaol scored goals through Dawson Junior and Rui Miguel at home to Nicosia, and will now have to travel to Brussels for the sole purpose of achieving the dream of qualifying for groups of top club European competition.This was the first time that a Cyprus team had recorded a victory over Anterlecht. The second leg is set for next Wednesday at the Constant Van de Stock stadium in Brussels.Limassol is undefeated in the fifth consecutive European games, conceding one goal. In previous qualifying matches, Limassol beat Linfield of North Aireland 3-0 and recorded a 2-0 victory aggregate over Partizan of Serbia.Ouon is a French-born Rwandan footballer who is regarded as one of the best centre backs in the Cyprus league, having won the ‘Defender of the Year’ prize in the 2008–09 season.The imposing defender played for Amavubi during the 2010 Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign under Croatian coach Branko Tucak, but has since been ignored by, first, Sellas Tetteh and now Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojovic.The 2012–13 Cypriot First Division begins on September 1, and will end on May 19 2013. AEL Limassol are the defending champions after winning last season’s title with 60 points in 26 matches played.
