Africa describes a Geographical location not poverty

Editor, Yes, Rwanda is guilty of threatening to demonstrate to others around them that “African” is an adjective that merely describes geography and not something that places a certain limit on how much dignity you can make claim to, or how much poverty and backwardness you are meant to endure in perpetuity.

No, "African” is merely an adjective describing geography, nothing more. If a people inhabiting this geographical designation determine that they don’t want to be poor and backward and are making a concerted effort to claim their dignity -- then so be it.

Such an endeavour is not automatically illegitimate just because they inhabit the geographical designation the Romans termed "Africa”. And it shouldn’t be for other people who similarly happen to inhabit this geographical designation. Rwanda should show the way! "Africa” means geography, not a consignment to eternal poverty and want. Lead the way, Rwanda!Peter DM, Eastern Suburbs
