Fallen giants Kigali Volleyball Club had every reason to jubilate on Sunday after halting APR’s scintillating run in the revamped Coca-Cola league with a 3-2 set win in Nyanza.
The win was KVC’s first in the league that has been largely dominated by APR. After falling short in the first three phases, the new-look KVC side lifted their game to breathe some life into their title hopes.
The KVC coach Jean Marie Nsengiyumva yesterday attributed Sunday’s win to the team’s strong blocks.
"We frustrated APR’s attack with our strong blocks. They were short of answers,” Nsengiyumva who has been at KVC since 1997 reckoned. He also hailed the team for playing as a unit.
"KVC has a couple of new signings who have been trying to fit in the team since the start of the league.”
"But I’m happy that throughout the fourth phase, we played as a team and it paid off,” Nsengiyumva added.
In the ladies’ section, UNR showed why experience is vital after coming from a set down to win 3-1 against APEDI Rwaza.
After going down 24-26 in the first set, the 2006 champions bounced back with 25-21, 25-18 and 25-17 set wins to wrap up their second phase win this year. Groupe Scolaire Rwaza finished third.
