The book Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage book written by Elizabeth Gilbert is based on Gilbert’s decision to marry a Brazilian man named Felipe whom she met in Indonesia. The book mainly shows the situations that lead to the institution of marriage and how people tend to take matrimony for granted. Gilbert and Felipe were both divorced the time they met; they fell in love but decided never to get married again. But both where faced with situation that had marriage would be the only solution.   Felipe was detained at an American border and was told that he would not cross. Therefore they were left with only one choice, to get married.  It’s a book that would definitely teach several people the essence of marriage despite of some people who consider the institution outdated. Elizabeth Gilbert is best known for her 2006 memoirs, Eat, Pray, Love, which as of December 2010, spent 199 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. According to the Book review by Sarah Hampson in ‘The Globe and Mail’, Gilbert may have struggled to write this book in the shadow of Eat, Pray, Love. Hampson further stated that, the exchange Gilbert has with her mother, who gave up a career to stay at home with her two daughters, rings completely true and is a valuable insight into the complicated institution of marriage.
