Africa Nations Championships

Yesterday

Rwanda   1-1   Sudan

Sudan qualify on 5-1 aggregate

Uganda   1-1   Tanzania

Tanzania qualify on 3-1 aggregate

A Elias Uzamukunda first half strike was not enough to enable Rwanda book a place in the final round of the qualifying stages of the African Nation Championships yesterday at Nyamirambo stadium.

Rwanda bowed out of the inaugural Africa Nations Championship on 1-5 goal aggregate.

Amavubi team which needed to score five-goal goals to make it into the next phase of the competition reserved for home-based players wasted several chances after failing to a first minute goal when Amavubi custodian Jean-Claude Ndoli failed to clear a back pass.

Amavubi team captain Ismail Nshutinamagara made a light back pass which Ndoli failed to clear.

Sudan who played mainly a defending game made a few counter attacks, a feat which enabled the home side to play in their half for most of the game.

Jean Mugiraneza, Eric Gasana and substitute Peter Kagabo came close for Amavubi.

Sudan’s a lone strike in the second half by Saif Eldin Ali Idris hit the woodwork.

This time Amavubi team coach Blanko Tucak never repeated the inept tactics and poor organization that were noticed in the first leg’s 0-4 humiliating loss in Khartoum a fortnight ago.

Despite playing a 1-all draw against the Sudan, Amavubi team’s football display was better compared to the Khartoum display.

Elsewhere, Uganda also failed to overhaul a first leg 2-0 deficit against Tanzania when they drew 1-1 in Kampala.

Tanzania advanced to the next round with a 3-1 goal aggregate.

Geoffrey Sserunkuma scored for the Cranes on the 7th minute while former Atraco striker Athuman Mohammed a.k.a Machupa equalized for Taifa Stars on the 44th minute.

Sudan will face Tanzania in the second round matches scheduled for May 16-18, where the finals in Cote d’Ivoire run from February 22 to March 8, next year.
