The campaign to select the country’s beauty queen has got three more contestants from the Northern Province to join another 12 in the upcoming national beauty pageant.During a colourful event that attracted thousands of local spectators, Francine Uwase, beat five other contestants to emerge the winner in the just concluded preliminary upcountry selections. The first runner-up was Francine Ingabire, while the second runners-up was Angel Uwamahoro. After winning total prize money of US$100 (approximately Rwf60, 000) each and special goodies from Simba Supermarket, all the three winners expressed determination to go all the way and win the ultimate prize. However, the contest was marred by a number of unsatisfactory proceedings, including an incident where all the contestants responded to questions in Kinyarwanda apart from the winner.Despite being requested to express themselves verbally in either English or French, all the contestants spoke in their native Kinyarwanda. But Uwase, who spoke French fluently and articulated herself with great enthusiasm and confidence, won herself the last smile at the end of the audition.
