Ganzi 27.58SWIMMER Jackson Niyomugabo became the latest Rwandan athlete to exit the London Games after failing to reach the semi finals of the 50-metres freestyle competition yesterday at Aquactics centre.The two-time Olympian set a personal best of 27:38 to finish fourth in the heat stage. He came behind Djibouti’s Osman Abdourahman, who clocked 27:25. Egypt’s Elkheder Mohammed finished second in a time of 27:26 and Wei Ching of American Samoe, who clocked 27:30.Niyomugabo improved his previous best by 36 seconds he clocked fours ago in Beijing. He came ahead of Uganda’s Mugula Ganzi, who finished in fifth position with 27:58 and Cameroon’s Paul Ekane who came sixth in 27:87 and Ethiopia’s Teshale Girma who finished last in 28: 99.In the overall rankings, Niyomugabo finished 51 places behind Bovell George of Trinidad and Tobago who went through as the best qualifier for the semifinals after clocking 21:77 seconds.The top 16 swimmers from the heats progressed to the semi-finals while the top eight will advance to the final.Niyomugabo follows compatriot Fred Yannick Sekamana (Judo) in the exit chamber after the French-based athlete was beaten on Monday by Brazil’s Bruno Mendoca in the preliminary round. Action continues today with swimmer Alphonsine Agahozo competing in the 50-metree freestyle. The 18-yeer old will compete in heat three; line up in lane four alongside Ethiopia’s Gebremedhin Yanet, Araakji Mohammed of Qatar, O’Reilly Clashing of Antigua and Barbuda, Izmaylova Katerina of Tajikistan. Others include; Hemthon Vitiny of Cambodia, Samassekpu Fatoumata of Mali and Shajan Aminath of Maldives.
