Three vie for Gicumbi mayoral seat

Three candidates have been given the green light by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) to campaign for the vacant Gicumbi District mayoral seat. Gilbert Rubayita, Theophile Sanvura and John Nkunzurwanda were the only ones who submitted forms to occupy the vacant seat on the Gicumbi District Advisory Council (DAC)to pave way for the election of the new mayor.On Tuesday, NEC’s Executive Secretary, Charles Munyaneza, told The New Times all the nominees fulfilled the requirements and were thus approved to participate in the elections."Each one of them handed in the required documents on time to participate as contestants,” Munyaneza said.He confirmed that official campaigns began Tuesday and elections for the vacant post will be held on August 10, and a week later, the Mayor will be elected from the DAC.Munyaneza said next week will be used to prepare ballot papers as well as train electoral officials who will be in charge of conducting the process.The former Mayor, Bonane Nyangezi, resigned at the beginning of the year citing personal reasons.The elections are set to take place on August 17 and all the candidates have expressed determination to meet the standard expectations once elected into office.
