Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS) will early next month conduct a nationwide exercise aimed treating eye diseases among inmates incarcerated in different prisons in the country. In an interview with The New Times yesterday, Emmanuel Rukundo, who is in charge of social affairs and human rights at RCS said the programme will be implemented through cooperation with Kanombe Military Hospital in all the 13 prisons across the country."The exercise is part of our obligations of ensuring the inmates remain healthy. We have so far received over 2,000 cases of inmates complaining of eye ailments,” said Rukundo. He added that they enlisted the support of the military hospital because of the vast experience in specialised treatment and providing outreach health services. He said that the exercise will begin on August 6 at Kigali Central Prison commonly known as 1930 before being extended to other prisons countrywide, expected to go on for a whole month. The official added that after the diagnosis, those with serious eye diseases will undergo operation whereas others with minor illness will be given medicine, depending on their status.
