On Sunday night, Tusker Project Fame (TPF) aired their last performance show of Season 5.
It was an event somewhat shrouded by speculation on who would win the contest: Would it be Rwanda’s Jackson Kalimba, Burundi’s Joe Irankunda or one of the Kenyan ladies Doreen Muchiri and Ruth Matete?
It was clear from their performances that none of the four contestants was distracted from their final goal, to win the grand cash prize – Kshs5 million (about Rwf35 millions).
Despite the finely-tuned rhythm of the show, each contestant performed one song that had viewers thinking the evening couldn't end soon enough. However, after the performances, only one contestant had to be announced the winner.
It was a twist of events as most of the fans anticipated Jackson to win.
As the show came to a close, Kenya’s Matete took the title as the winner and bagged a cash prize of 5 million shillings as well as a 10 million shillings recording contract with Universal Records. Taking 2nd to 4th position were Muchiri, Kalimba and Irankunda respectively.
After announcing her winner, the clearly excited Ruth fell to the floor and remained motionless for some time. Out of breath and still shocked, Ruth couldn’t find the words to express her feelings and she was given time to calm her self down.
In her acceptance speech, Matete said, "Thank you God, I love you so much. To all my fans, expect something new, something which has never been done before. Thank you, I love you.”Camp Mula, a Kenyan Hip-Hop and R&B group were the guest performers and did one of their songs live.
This season has been full of surprises and disappointments for most fans as almost all the anticipated winners were evicted from the reality show in the early stages.
TPF season 5 started 8 weeks back with 15 contestants including three from Uganda. Others were from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan.
