Banning school canteens is counterproductive

Editor, I have read in the newspapers that the Ministry of Education ordered all the schools in the country to stop the sale of foodstuffs in their respective canteens, citing health concerns. Protecting health of our children is important, no question about it.

Editor,I have read in the newspapers that the Ministry of Education ordered all the schools in the country to stop the sale of foodstuffs in their respective canteens, citing health concerns. Protecting health of our children is important, no question about it.However, the move is likely to cause more harm than good since some students will be forced to escape from school to buy snacks of their choice from nearby localities. More importantly, there are certain basic materials that students cannot do without yet they are not supplied by schools. Things like soaps, lotions, books, sanitary towels, etc. The ministry needs to urgently revisit this decision; otherwise it might end up causing more problems to both the schools and the students. Just thinking aloud…EvaristKigali
