Kagame club championshipYesterdayPorts 1-3 URAYanga 2-0 APRTodaySimba vs AS Vita SS9Amavubi assistant skipper Haruna Niyonzima put his former teammates to bed as he helped holders Yanga beat rivals APR 2-0 in the final group C match played yesterday at the National stadium in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.Niyonzima, 26, was facing his former club for the first time since signing for Yanga in a reported US$30,000 deal last season.Yanga won the battle of wits courtesy of a brace from Said Bahanuz, who took his tally in the competition to three.Bahanuz scored Yanga’s first goal on 23rd minute after he met a daring cross from Uganda Cranes midfielder Hamiss Kiiza. The striker overstretched beyond the always dependable defender Mbuyu Twite, leaving goalie Jean Claude Ndoli with no chance.APR, three-time winners, had two efforts on goal in the first half from Donatien Tuyizere and Kabange Twite but were all well saved by Yanga’s impressive custodian Yaw Berko.Despite creating little in the second half, the champions grabbed the second goal after APR’s central defender Johnson Bagoole slipped as he tried to clear a dangerous ball inside the goal area only to miss the touch, benefiting Bahanuz who made no mistake to shoot past a static Ndoli on 69th minute.APR’s loss dropped them to third position of Group C with four points and set up a quarterfinal clash against Uganda Revenue Authority, who topped group A with maximum points from three matches.Burundian champions Atletico, who lead with seven points will face DR Congo’s AS Vita Club, who finished second in group A, while Yanga will take on second-placed team from Group B.Debutants Wau El Salaam of South Sudan kissed goodbye the tournament without a point and having conceded 19 goals and scored just once in three matches. In another match played yesterday, Ports of Djibouti lost to URA 1-3 to bow out of the championship after conceding 12 goals in three games. The final matches for groups A and B will be played today with Azam FC hosting Tusker FC to determine the two teams that will progress to the quarterfinals. Later in the evening, six-time winners Simba will meet AS Vita.
