Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) president has played down accusations made by Adolph Rukenkanya that he was sacked for no good reason.

Speaking to Times Sport on Monday, Jean Paul Munyandamutsa noted that the former national team coach was sacked because he failed to fulfill the required commitments in his contract.

"We had insisted that the coach would help orient, build capacity of the RAF administration and also detect talents before any further dealings," Munyandamutsa, who is also the Mayor of Kamonyi district, said.

He was reacting to a question on what exactly to Rukenkanya being sacked after all he had done for Rwandan athletics over the last four, five years.

"It was realized that after three months, especially after the Edinburgh scandal, the head coach would not make the results RAF expected," Munyandamutsa noted.

He, however, refuted reports that the federation dismissed Rukenkanya, noting that they simply did not renew his contract.

"We wish to have the best coach from wherever we could get him," the RAF president stated before noting that there are a whole lot of talented and qualified coaches who could catapult Rwanda’s athletes to another level. Rukenkanya is accused among other thing of taking on administrative duties, which are not his and misappropriating PUMA kit meant for national athletes.

As a result, RAF fined him $7000 but the Burundian born trainer has vowed to take legal action should RAF deduct any money from his salary. Rukenkanya is pad by the Sports ministry but through the local athletics federation who are his immediate bosses.
