Young Tigers won by 155 runs

André Kayitera scored a century on Sunday to propel Young Tigers to a 155-run victory over Kigali Cricket Club in the opening game of the 2008 Sulfo League.

Kayitera, 19 who is also Young Tigers’ skipper blazed 124 runs to guide his side to a respectable total of 255 runs in 45.2 overs.

The Rwandan international’s score; the highest in Rwandan cricket history included 14 fours. He received good support from Eric Dusingizimana (43) and former Indorwa all-rounder new signing Samaly Subashish (26) runs.

In reply, KCC only managed 100 runs after the club’s top batsmen Mehboob Jasat and Ayaaz Khan both fell cheaply to Eric Dusabemungu who picked seven wickets, one short of the record haul set by KCC’s Arif Patel three years ago. Mohamad Jasat top scored for KCC with 20 runs.

Kayitera’s century is only the second in the history of Rwandan cricket. The first century scored on Rwandan soil came way back in 2004 by Uganda’s international and ex-Right Guards batsman Edward Kataha who smashed 102 still against KCC.

"Today’s score has been a dream come true for me and I will live to remember it for the rest of my life. I struggled in South Africa but this is a great come back for me and I hope to carry on with this kind of form for the rest of season,” the excited all-rounder acknowledged.

"Even at the top level, you don’t see many cricketers scoring centuries. He was on top of his game today and hopefully he will keep this form going for the rest of the season,” his team-mate Dusabemungu added.

Sunday’s performance is living proof that Young Tigers are absolute contenders for this year’s Sulfo League title.
