Last week a practical two-day workshop on writing children’s picture books and school based readers for Rwanda was concluded. This was part of Rwanda Children’s Book Project, a venture of Youth Literacy Organisation (formerly High School Review) in partnership with Hope: Global (Hope: Rwanda).Attended by up 30 students, the workshop took place at Landstar Hotel, Remera, Kigali City. The students come from different schools, including: Sonrise High School, FAWE Girls’ School, Nu-Vision High School, Lycée De Kigali and King David Academy. It targeted talented Rwandan high school students interested in developing writing skills.The sessions involved a deep introduction to creative writing, how to structure a narrative and developing visual literacy as well as drafting stories for the Rwandan audience. Trainers include Dr. Tim Hawkes, Headmaster of The King’s School, and Peta Gresham who were supported by 15 other King’s Team member.The Youth Literacy Organisation, promotes literacy through encouraging the culture of reading and writing. Through nurturing young aspiring writers to tell stories, they empower the youth to take part in transforming Rwanda’s education through the teaching and learning process—a move towards a brighter future of Rwanda.
