Several international dignitaries arrived in the country yesterday to attend a high level international conference organised in line with tomorrow’s Independence and Liberation anniversaries in Kigali. The delegates include Dr Jendayi E. Frazer, (former Assistant Secretary of state for Africa), the Director of Carnegie Mellon University new Centre for International Politics and Innovation (CIPI), Alphonse Ntumba Luaba, the Executive Secretary of International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Mmasekgoa Masire Mwamba, and the deputy Secretary General of Common Wealth.Others are Prof. Margee Ensign, the President of the American University of Nigeria and Prof. Jean, a professor of social sciences and economics in the universities of Geneva and the Sorbonne.The conference on democracy and good governance was preceded by exchanges among academics and policy practitioners from Rwanda and beyond which kicked off Thursday. Also expected for tomorrow’s event is Tanzania’s President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.Speaking to The New Times last evening, Pacifique Barihuta, the Conference’s Protocol Officer, said 1986 Nobel Laureate in Literature, Wole Soyinka, also arrives today evening for the gala dinner nightThe conference under the theme "Governance and Democracy: an African perspective”, will also reflect on what Rwanda and Africa, in general, have achieved over the last 50 years after independence, the lessons learnt and how to make African renaissance a reality in the next decades.
