Last week my partner and I were celebrating our love and decided to go for a late night dinner in some fancy restaurant where you only go once when the pocket allows, or when you are celebrating something special. As we were leaving the house, I realized the weather was very hard and I rushed back to the house to pick something extra to cover myself. The drive to the restaurant was short since it is situated in our neighborhood. As we sat to order our food from the special menu of the night, the Chef who was making rounds to make sure that his clients are happy and satisfied, paused by our table for greetings. As we were talking he realized that my teeth were chattering because of the cold.He did not waste time, but immediately advised us on what to eat. He also went ahead to advise me on what to eat during the cold season! Something I have never known about is that one can control feeling cold by the food they eat! I know of soups and tea…but definitely not food. The following day I decided to make some research on the net. Blood pH tends to become more acidic (lower) during the cold season. This is because cold weather lowers, or acidifies, blood pH. Typically people with acidic blood pH tend to feel cold all the time. They dislike venturing outdoors during the entire season and prefer staying indoors or travel to warmer places. Since it is not possible to stay indoors or travel the entire season evading the cold; you have to compensate for acidic blood pH by eating foods that will help raise blood pH levels. Doing this will help keep your body chemistry stay in balance and help keep you comfortable this season.Foods that contain protein and fat are especially recommended during this season. These are meats, fish, eggs, nuts, and high fat dairy. These foods will also help you balance your blood pH and may make you feel warmer.Warm Drinks: Herbal tea is a great antioxidant and will help relax you, improve immunity, and flush your system out if you have a cold. Green tea is also powerful when it comes to fighting infection. Stay away from coffee because it will only lower your blood pH more.Meat: Try eating more meat during this season. As I talked above, protein raises blood pH to make us warmer. A well steamed meat cooked slowly under low heat makes an excellent broth; this is very good in making the body warmer.Iron: Eating foods high in iron such as red meats and green leafy vegetables can help keep you warm. The body needs iron to make the thyroid hormone which stimulates heat production. Make sure your diet includes spinach, salads, cooked broccoli or asparagus, and other dark green vegetables.Good Fat: Eat foods like organic nuts, peanut butter, bacon, and avocado juice. Cook your food using olive oil or butter. These are healthy fats that will increase pH levels and warm you up.Soy: Eat plenty of soy products like soybeans and soy nuts. Soy meat chunks are also available in the market-stir fry with vegetables, and serve with rice.Warm unsweetened soy milk is also soothing on a cold day.Try these foods and stay warm.
