NGOMA–The Governor of the Eastern Province, Odette Uwamariya, has ordered local leaders in the region to demolish all housing structures that don’t conform to standard construction regulations. Speaking at a meeting with local leaders, on Monday, Uwamariya was unhappy that there were poor constructions going on and ordered an immediate inspection in all districts. The Governor tasked local leaders to assess and demolish houses that were constructed illegally."We have some serious cases of illegal constructions in Bugesera and Kayonza districts. Bugesera’s case is even worse because one such house was built by a councillor, what kind of a leader is that?” she wondered. Aphrodis Nambaje, the new Mayor of Ngoma District, said communities would be helped to get proper shelter."We have so far covered at least five sectors...there are certain areas where houses that replaced Nyakatsi are even worse. We shall help and sensitise population to conform to laws regarding construction”.Meanwhile, Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA) has requested local leaders to identify all houses with asbestos roofings for replacement.Esther Mutamba, the Director General of RHA, said the government’s plan to replace asbestos, a health hazard, was at an advanced stage."Asbestos are so dangerous and cause cancer particularly when removing them,” she said.
