Editor,Efforts by the Ministry of Health to clamp down on drug abuse are commendable. However, the ministry ought to realise that open burning of drugs can produce a huge amount of toxic air pollutants that are health hazards. The ministry should not burn illegal drugs in open space. Imagine second hand tobacco smoke itself has at least 69 of the toxic chemicals that cause cancer including Arsenic, benzene, heavy metals like Cadmium, Chromium (in its metallic form), Nickel, Polonium (which is radioactive chemical element). So how much will the air that we breathe affected by burning illegal drugs in open space? The ministry and other authorities should protect us and ban this once and for all! The environmental watchdog REMA should advise on this issue.KanyanaRwamagana
