Local leaders in Gakenke District are in the spot light after bricks meant for the construction of classrooms went missing.Residents who participated in making the bricks allege Phocus Uwimana, the former Executive Secretary of Rusasa Sector, connived with a few of his friends to illegally sell them."The bricks were hauled away after claims that it was agreed to sell them since the construction exercise was over,” a resident who identified himself as Emmanuel Nteziyaremye told The New Times. He explained that Uwimana reportedly consulted some local leaders for approval to sell the bricks to an unknown buyer.According to Nteziyaremye, the bricks were taken to Musanze town where the alleged buyer lives.Although Uwimana reportedly deposited part of the money on the Sector’s account, there is confusion surrounding the circumstances under which the bricks were sold. Some people say it is Uwimana who bought the bricks himself at an extremely cheap price because he is also said to be constructing a house in Musanze town.During a provincial meeting early this week, District Mayor, Deo Nzamwita, said about 117,000 bricks are believed to have gone missing."They (local leaders) are said to have participated in the illegal sale of the bricks and we have tentatively suspended them from work as investigations go on,” he said.Efforts to talk to Uwimana to comment on the accusations were futile as his phone was switched off by press time yesterday.
