While preparing to travel long distances, many women don’t really prepare for their journeys health wise yet it’s very crucial. On a recent visit to a neighbouring country, I travelled by bus with almost half of the passengers women.I wasn’t amused seeing grown up women buying roast chicken, plantains, french fries and soup packed in white small polythene bags by the roadside. The sight of the unkempt and grimy vendors that were selling the foodstuffs was unpleasant enough to stop anyone from buying the foodstuffs but my dear women were brave enough to eat that food.Well, it’s obvious that these women were probably starving since it was a long journey but I am certain they set off for the journey knowing that they would get hungry at some point. You don’t really have to be a doctor or nurse to know that buying foodstuffs from the roadside, especially from dirty people, is harmful to your health and could result in food poisoning and cholera. These are simple things that you expect every woman to know.Next time you’re taking a long trip, it’s healthier and wiser to pack your own food for the road and not buy them from the road stalls. It’s always easier and more convenient to pack simple snacks, fruit, juice or better still, drinking water. When you pack your own stuff, you’re at least sure that you’re eating clean food.Remember not to over eat or drink too much because you might get travelling sickness and need to throw up.Always carry clean hankies, disinfectants and some wet wipes to keep your hands clean in case you don’t have access to clean water and be mindful of the toilets or latrines you use along the way.
