NORTHERN PROVINCE

MUSANZE — Over 1500 ex-combatants have completed six-month training in literacy skills. The training was organised by the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission –RDRC. The group were handed over certificates this week.

According to Jean Sayinzonga, the chairman of RDRC, the commission embarked on an education programme to provide literacy skills to all illiterate ex soldiers.

The first phase of the two-year programme (2007-08) completed the training in reading, writing and mathematics that will lead them to training in other life skills.

According to Sayinzoga statistics show that an estimated 10,000 people joined the army at different times with no elementary education and are therefore illiterate.

He explained that the literacy training was part of the support accorded to the ex soldiers to find self sustenance and better reintegration in society.

The lessons which were conducted from secondary schools and churches in Musanze were supported by the Adventist Church (ADEPR).

Addressing the group, Seyinzoga urged them to join productive cooperative societies engaged in business, agriculture, carpentry and other income generating activities in order to overcome poverty.
