Rwanda`s representative to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), the Legislative arm of the East African Community (EAC), Abdul Karim Harerimana, has called on students to fight against the Genocide ideology.He made the call on Friday when he joined students of ESSI Secondary School in Nyamirambo to commemorate the1 8th Anniversary of the Genocide."As young people, students have the responsibility of educating the public to be united and avoid segregation,” Harerimana said.He reminded the students that they hold the future of the country and that whatever step taken should be in line with preparations to taking active participation towards national development.Students had earlier been to Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre to pay tribute to the Genocide victims. The visit started with a ‘Walk to Remember’.   Speaking on behalf of the National Commission for the fight against the Genocide (CNLG), Jules Ndabaganje, said there was need for the young generation to understand exactly what happened to their motherland, urging that it will help them to actively play a role in uniting the population.Isaac Munyakazi, the school headmaster, said that just like other institutions or schools, the annual event enables students to learn more about the history of this country."We are supporting over 75 orphans and we also came up with programmes and students’ clubs to teach against the genocide ideology,” Munyakanzi said.He added that the event was a special one as they remember students, teachers and parents who lost their lives in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.Shamim Uwera, a senior six student, told The Sunday Times that through the debating club, students have been exposed and are able to discuss about various topics about the Genocide.
