Rwanda National Police is set to construct another Gender Based Violence (GBV) health centre worth Rwf30 million in Kicukiro District, to further facilitate victims to access free medical treatment as part of the ongoing Police Week activities.The event to lay the foundation stone at Kicukiro Police Station was presided over by the City of Kigali Mayor, Fidele Ndayisaba, on Wednesday. The construction works are slated to take a total of three months. The centre, also known as Isange One-Stop centre, will be the second of its kind following the establishment of the inaugural one at Kacyiru Police Hospital in 2010, which scooped the United Nations Public Service Award (UNPSA-2012) dubbed "Promoting Gender Responsive Delivery” of Public Services in recognition of its work.Isange has been vital in responding to the needs of GBV victims by providing free medical, legal and psycho-social services such as counselling to victims.During the event, which also included the construction of a bridge connecting Niboye and Kanombe sectors, Paul Jules Ndamage, the Mayor of Kicukiro, handed over a cheque worth Rwf10 million towards the construction of the centre.Police also distributed 100 free mosquito nets and health insurance cover to vulnerable people in Kicukiro District.The inspector General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana, reminded the public to be responsible in ensuring their security, adding that security is a "socio economic factor that leads to uplifting people’s livelihoods."There would be no sustainable development if people continued to consume drugs and illicit brew,” Gasana said.Kicukiro was the last of five districts to host Police Week activities as part of the celebrations to mark the force’s 12th anniversary scheduled for June 16.
